Meet the Mayor

As someone who’s called North Charleston home for all of my life, I take immense pride in the city’s vibrant culture and history. I grew up in the historic Liberty Hill community, founded in 1871 by four freedmen. It was here I discovered my passion for sports, began to understand the meaning of community, and met my high school sweetheart, Tracy. Together, we raised two children, our greatest blessings. Today, serving as North Charleston’s  first African American mayor is one of the greatest honors of my life.

To me, North Charleston is more than just a city—it’s a place deeply rooted in rich traditions. I’ve watched our city transform from its industrial origins into a diverse hub with tremendous opportunities on the horizon. Transformative projects such as the Navy Yard Redevelopment, reclaiming our waterfront, Boeing’s cutting-edge airplane manufacturing, Mercedes EV Vans, Roper Medical’s future advanced medical campus, and the Coast Guard establishing their operational epicenter are bringing jobs and innovation to our community. I’m proud to work alongside a team of dedicated professionals, all committed to ensuring North Charleston’s growth into a sustainable, thriving city for generations to come.
