THE RIVERFRONT PARK

Blending the past with the present

Set on the banks of the beautiful Cooper River and surrounded by grand oaks and peaceful vistas, the easily accessible and picturesque Riverfront Park is a testament to the historical significance and transformative growth of North Charleston. Initially part of the Charleston Naval Base, established at the turn of the 20th century, the area served as a pivotal site for the United States Navy until its closure in 1996. Postclosure, the City of North Charleston embarked on an ambitious project to breathe new life into the extensive waterfront property, transforming it into what is now the 10-acre Riverfront Park.

Path to Greatness

Officially opened to the public in 2005, the park was envisioned as a communal space that highlights the area’s natural beauty while preserving its history. In 2022, the Noisette Pedestrian Creek Bridge, which connects the existing park to the north side of Noisette Creek, was added to increase the park’s greenspace. The bridge was named one of the world’s most beautiful elevated walkways by Architectural Digest, adding to the property’s allure as an idyllic site for concerts, weddings, and year-round events.

History Revived

Within the expanses of Riverfront Park are several treasured landmarks that the City of North Charleston dedicated signifi cant resources to meticulously restore, each telling its own story of the area’s historical and cultural heritage. As you enter the park you will first encounter The Gatekeeper’s Inn. Strategically positioned at the entrance of the park, this building played a crucial role in welcoming dignitaries and visitors to the former naval base. Nearby is the Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel, which once served as a spiritual refuge for service members and their families. Its doors were open to all, providing comfort and community in times of peace and conflict. Today, it continues to symbolize the unity and sacrifice inherent to the site’s military past.

As you continue through the serene park you will find Quarters K, built in the 1930s to provide housing for base officers, and The Admiral’s House, which stands as a stately reminder of the naval base’s commanding presence. Built in the early 20th century, this residence housed the base’s highest-ranking officers, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped the naval base’s legacy.

The park also holds the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial to honor the history of the naval base and the thousands of men and women who served their country there. The open pavilion memorial features a vertical wall that curves over visitors’ heads like the side of a ship with a stream that flows through the middle, meant to be reminiscent of sailors crossing gangways.

Riverfront Reservations

The park is home to one dining option that off ers visitors not just a meal, but an experience. MOMO opened in 2021 in one of the park’s revived Panama-style riverfront homes, which have been maintained on the property since its naval base era.
